Youth from the Ghar El Melh wetland area continued their journey towards the development of their green entrepreneurship ideas into concrete actionable business plans, with the assistance of GWP-Med and WWF-North Africa.
The Japanese Government, in cooperation with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), launched an online platform for sustainable and resilient recovery from COVID-19. Non-state actors were invited to contribute video messages – with GWP Chair Howard Bamsey stressing that water is at the heart of climate change adaptation.
GWP’s ongoing country consultations to evaluate the degree of implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is progressing as planned, with July being a busy month. In Central America alone, consultations were held in El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama (shown in the above photo).
The Adaptation Fund has funded for US$ 7.92 million a regional project submitted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in partnership with the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA). The Project intitled "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning Systems for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin" will contribute to improve the resilience of countries sharing the Volta Basin to flood and drought risks and to ensure sustainable socio-economic development of the riparian populations.
The International Symposium on “Water and Culture: Learning from Water Heritage to Innovate Regional Development” was held on 3 February in Tokyo, Japan. The aim was to achieve a deeper understanding of relations between people and water by visiting water heritage around the world. About 260 people from 43 countries participated, among those GWP Chair Howard Bamsey and GWP Technical Committee Chair Jerome Delli Priscoli. Dr. Delli Priscoli shared reflections from the U.S. experience on water resources.

Since being adopted by the GWP network last year, the new GWP Strategy 2020-2025 – Mobilising for a Water Secure World – was launched at a series of events around the world throughout the second half of 2019. The strategy calls for urgent action on, and agile responses to, the world water crises.
On 29 November 2019, His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, former President of Tanzania, officially took over the Chairmanship of Global Water Partnership Southern Africa and Africa Coordination Unit (GWPSA-ACU).
As part of the UN SDG 6 Data Drive, the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme is substantially scaling up its efforts in 2020 by facilitating 60+ in-country processes across the world to assist national stocktaking and reporting, and more importantly, to support transformative action towards a greater implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
