The Africa Water Facility (AWF)/ African Development Bank (AfDB) and Global Water Partnership (GWP) are supporting the Development Plan and Feasibility Study for Urban Sanitation, Drainage and Solid Waste Management in Chimoio and Inhambane in Mozambique. The overall goal of the investments is to improve climate resilience and health in the two target municipalities. This will be achieved through improved services in sanitation, drainage and solid waste management, impacting in the form of reduced risk for flooding and improved health. From the 8th to the 16th March 2017, Representatives from GWP and AWF/ AfDB attended the project launch mission in Maputo, Chimoio and Inhambane.

GWP representatives are at the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, taking place 16-26 May. The focus is on GWP support for the implementation of the Paris Agreement, specifically in relation to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) from countries, the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes, South-South Cooperation, and financing. On Thursday 19 May GWP is co-organising a high level side event together with the Government of Morocco, the UNFCCC Secretariat Adaptation Programme, and GIZ.

Cameroon is already facing consequences of climate change, including an abnormal recurrence of extreme weather phenomena such as violent winds, high temperatures, and heavy rainfall, which endanger communities’ ecosystems and the services they provide. The consequences of climate change may undermine Cameroon's efforts to reduce poverty, develop a strong, diversified, and competitive economy, and strengthen national unity and consolidate the democratic process. Thus, the National Adaptation Plan for Climate Change (NAPCC) was created to assist the Cameroonian people in facing this important challenge.

In Benin, Burkina and Niger the biding processes have been completed for the consultants to carry out the study on the Identification of development priorities in the Mékrou Basin being part of each country that will be followed by a validation workshop. The development of the study started in each country and is being followed closely by the CWP and the Mékrou PMT.

 

In Sub Saharan Africa, climate change is worsening at an alarming rate. The situation on food security vis-à-vis water resources is serious and everyone has a responsibility to develop appropriate means to address the issue. Following national consultations in the led-up to the UN Committee on Food Security’s (UN CFS) 42^nd session last year, 50 representatives from 9 countries across Africa met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 18-19 May to prepare for the next step; moving from identification to implementation (#WFEEnexus).

The Project Officer took part on May 6 and 11 respectively in Burkina and Niger to follow up meetings to discuss the standard template for the drafting of the consultants reports on the identification of national development priorities in the Mékrou basin.

For transboundary water collaboration of the Lancang-Mekong River Basin countries, GWP China Region and GWP Southeast Region, with the GWPO support, have set up a partnership with the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center (LMWRCC). It has an initiative harvest in early December 2017.
