The project titled "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin’’, for which the development process started in 2015 and received great support and contributions from Volta Basin Authority Executive Secretariat and institutions from the six Volta Basin riparian countries, has been approved for funding from the Adaptation Fund during the 23rd meeting of the Project and Program Evaluation Committee (PPRC) of the Fund held from 9 to 11 October, 2018 in Bonn, Germany.
The transboundary issue is key in water resources management in Africa and mostly in West Africa where all countries except the Island of Cape Verde share at least one river with at least another country. The region has 22 major transboundary river basins, and six established transboundary river basin authorities to contribute to strengthen transboundary cooperation.
The Country Water Partnership of Benin has facilitated the setting up on 20 February 2020 of the Local Water Committee (LWC) of the Tchoutchoubou micro-basin in the commune of Tanguiéta, northern part of the country. This activity is part of the project "promoting IWRM in the Mekrou and Pendjari sub-basins" of the phase 2 of the Water, Hygiene and Sanitation Programme (ProSEHA) funded by the German Cooperation GIZ.
Under the patronage of Cabo Verde, in collaboration with Italy and FAO, WASAG announces its 1st International Forum on Water Scarcity in Agriculture to be held in Praia, Cabo Verde on 19-22 March, to coincide with the celebrations of the World Water Day 2019 which this year adopts the theme of ‘Leaving no one behind’.
The Guinea Country Water Partnership is preparing to sign a MOU for its collaboration with national Hydraulic Fund. The chair El Hadj Mamadou Alpha HANN had a meeting with the Director General of the Hydraulics Fund, Mr. Ibrahima DIANE to discuss the issue and agree on the steps of the process.
During the months of December and January the Country Water Partnership of Mali undertook to closely sensitize main stakeholders to raise the dwindling political will in the country on IWRM. On Thursday, December 27, 2018, a meeting was held with the Malian Association of Municipalities (AMM), to exchange with local authorities on Integrated Water Resources Management.
Under the Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans programme (“NAP-Ag”), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are working together with ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Planning and Finance, and key national stakeholders in selected countries to incorporate agricultural sectors into National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) processes.
The Country Water Partnership of Niger together with the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation through the Permanent Secretariat for IWRM (SP/PANGIRE), the Directorate General of Water Resources (DGRE) by Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA) have submitted a project proposal “Water for growth and poverty reduction in the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger” or "Mekrou Project Phase 2 - NIGER".
