GWP’s ongoing country consultations to evaluate the degree of implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is progressing as planned, with July being a busy month. Good governance around transboundary waters is critical for water security, regional socio-economic development, peace, and stability. Since 2010, GWP has been conducting capacity building trainings on International Water Law (IWL) and water governance. While there is no shortage of trainings on transboundary water issues, the uniqueness of GWP’s IWL workshops lie in the peer-to-peer and cross-continental learning, says GWP Senior Network Specialist Yumiko Yasuda. This has proved to be a successful formula that GWP is now ready to take to the next level – an online platform to support existing training and close learning gaps.
GWP has organised five regional consultations on the proposed HELP Principles on Investments and Financing for water-related disaster risk reduction. The consultations were held in Central and Eastern Europe, South Asia, Southern Africa, South East Asia and South America. “Disasters are barriers for development. In our region we are struggling to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these issues must be part of the political agenda in every country," said Alejandra Mujica, Regional Coordinator of GWP South America, who hosted the final consultation on 23 April.
Some 40 participants from civil society, universities and research centres, ministerial departments and the media attended on 4 and 5 September a meeting to exchange and share the results of the diagnosis of the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the Garafiri dam and those expected from Fomi.
