Water is a key component of ensuring climate action. A GWP delegation was in Bonn, Germany, to convey this message and raise the profile of water at the UN climate talks, COP23, which took place 6-17 November. Rapid implementation to the Paris Agreement is paramount to battle climate change. Water is integral to build climate resilience and is therefore a crucial component of implementing the Paris Agreement. And GWP is well positioned to help countries deliver on the adaptation components of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

GWP China and the World Resources Institute (WRI) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on March 2, 2017, in Beijing. Mdm Qihua CAI, Chair of GWP China, Prof. Yunzhong JIANG, Secretary General and the Secretariat officers visited WRI's office where had the MOU signing ceremony.

GWP Central America is part of the organising committee for the sub-regional process leading up to the 8th World Water Forum, to be held in Brasilia, March 2018. In this capacity, GWP Central America, together with GWP Caribbean, held an online consultation to identify cross-cutting themes and topics that will be discussed at the Forum next year. The results were presented at the 2nd Stakeholders Consultation Meeting in Brasilia, on April 26-27.

GCWP Chair, Executive Secretary and National IWRM Focal point during the month of May 2018 have interacted with the Ministry of Water Resources on pending UN 1997 Transboundary Water Convention Ratification Bill for action.

This year, GWP’s annual Network Meeting for Partners has been conducted for the first time in a “Follow-the-Sun” format. The objective being to engage as many of the network Partners as possible in a meaningful way, while keeping cost at bay, and also to make sure everyone who wanted could participate in their own language.

On August 17, GWP granted formal accreditation to GWP Colombia - or “Alianza Colombiana para el Agua”, which is the local name. Colombia is a country recognised by its technical capacity in Latin America and beyond.

The annual GWP Network Meeting will be held on 11 October at 13.00 Central European Time (CET). It is a virtual meeting, to be broadcast on the GWP website www.gwp.org – with a special guest message from UN Deputy Secretary General (DSG) Jan Eliasson. In December 2016, China issued a document to implement a river chief system nationwide. A river chief, as the name suggests, is responsible for the management and protection of watercourses, as well as preventing pollution and restoring the water ecology. Government officials are hired as river chiefs at provincial, city, county and township levels. Heads of provincial regions will be general chiefs that are responsible for all rivers and lakes in the region.
