Water insecurity costs the global economy roughly US$ 500 billion annually and causes the death and displacement of more people than cyclones, floods and earthquakes combined. In particularly vulnerable economies, a 50% reduction in drought effects could lead to a 20% increase in per capita GDP over a period of 30 years. Therefore, mechanisms to enhance integrated drought management are more critical than ever.
The Global Water Partnership Southern Africa participated in the recently held Water Show Africa 2017. The event, organised by Terrapinn Pty Ltd was held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa on 28-29 March 2017. As part of the implementation of the scientific component of the Mekrou project (2014-2017), five computer equipment packages each consisting of a central unit, a screen, an inverter and decision support tools softwares were given to scientific institutions in the three countries of the project: National Water Institue (INE) of Benin, Institute for Environment and Agricultural Research (INERA) of Burkina Faso and University Abdou Moumini (UAM) of Niger and the two regional institutions, NBA and AGHRYMET.

A new guidance document has been developed to support the design of well-balanced strategies for Integrated Flood Management. “This guidance document serves as the operational link between the policy and tool papers previously published by the Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM),” said Johannes Cullman, Director of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Climate and Water Department.
