SITWA Regional Consultations on Strategic Planning Held in East Africa

The Strengthening Institutions for Trans-boundary Water Management in Africa (SITWA) is a European Union-funded project implemented by GWP and ANBO to build the capacity of Basin Water Organizations (BWOs) in Africa to enhance their positive contribution to integrated management of trans-boundary water and environmental resources, and to sustainable socio-economic development.

Non Conventional Water Resources Programme in Cyprus

“Mission Water”, the Non Conventional Water Resources Programme in Cyprus, was initiated in 2013 by the Global Water Partnership - Mediterranean (GWP-Med), in partnership with the Coca-Cola Foundation and Lanitis Bros (Coca-Cola bottler in Cyprus). The Programme’s activities are implemented in collaboration with the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE). The Programme is funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation through a two-year grant (2013-2015) of 400,000 US dollars.

Transboundary: Prespa Basin National Park (#258)

The Prespa basin was affected by over-abstraction and diversion of water, wetland drainage, deforestation and overgrazing, leading to danger for human livelihoods and ecosystems. Action was taken by WWF through the creation of the Society for the Protection of Prespa, eventually culminating in the creation of Prespa National Park. The lesson drawn is that to change the perspective of local stakeholders to ensure that they share a common vision is vital for success.

Water, Climate and Development - Side Event at World Water Week

A Framework for Water Security and Climate Resilient Development developed by AMCOW and the AU to provide an approach for developing no/low regret investments will be introduced to the global audience. Focus will also be on the application of the Framework in African development cooperation for climate resilient development.

Zambia: Water Watch Groups (#340)

Following the reorganisation of the water sector in Zambia, an action that decentralised service provision, it became crucial to monitor the service providers and the consumer experience. Action was taken to set up Water Watch Groups that have as their responsibility to raise public awareness about rights and obligations. This case study, concludes that consumer involvement is the key to the success of water sector reforms.

Integrating Water Security and Climate Resilience Programmes into Vietnam Irrigation Management Plan.

During the year, Vietnam Water Partnership reviewed the existing irrigation management status and plan as well as drafted a proposal for new irrigation management plan. Two key government institutions, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of Vietnam, are fully supporting the implementation of the activities that are under WACDEP program. Vietnam Water Partnership also coordinated closely with National Focal Point of Vietnam to UNFCCC, which will utilize the results of this program into other program of climate change agenda in the country.
