A critical component of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is the protection of our aquatic ecosystems, not only for anthropogenic benefits but also recognising the needs of the plants and animals that depend on these natural resources.

The Burkina WACDEP team had field trips in February (13th 2015) and March (13, 25 and 29) to first inform and discuss with interested parties on the progress of the demonstration project and find consensual solutions for the conduct of the project. Due to new budget limitation developments the intervention was reframed based on available financial resources.

The Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) was jointly founded in 2001 by the World Meteorological Organization and the Global Water Partnership.

The Global Water Partnership (GWP) launched its new Youth Engagement Strategy at Stockholm World Water Week on August 25^th, 2015. The youth strategy supports the wider GWP “Towards 2020” Strategy as does the GWP Gender Strategy, which was launched in August 2014. 

Sustainable management of any physical resource requires a good understanding of the distribution and quantities of that resource. Thus, information is highly valuable but it can be complex and hard to manage. Integrated management approaches in particular require massive amounts of spatially and temporally varying data from many different sectors: the quality and quantity of water resources; the geography of the area; the local geology and soil; the human communities; and the land use patterns is all important and interrelated information. One of the biggest challenges in IWRM today is to represent the full scope of this information, of the variables, interactions, and complexity that every water project and policy is confronted with. Analytical tools are needed to interpret the data in a way that makes it usable for decision makers. Models and Decision Support Systems (DSS) do exactly that.

The Integrated Drought Management in West Africa (IDMP WA) Project Officer visited Torodi, Niger from 13 to 16 April 2016. She was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Niger CWP and the person in charge of communication to visit the demonstration pilot site in Kankantouti, a village of the rural municipality of Torodi.

The Regional Project Officer was part of the GWPWA team that participated in the GWP Regional Days. She took part on May 11, 2016 at the IDMP session that brought togetjer the Global progarmme Manager and the regional programmes managers of Eastern Africa and Central and Eastern Europe to discuss the challenges, difficulties and especially the added value of IDMP in each region.

 

GWP Armenia organised a workshop to identify alternative technologies for urban wastewater treatment in Armenia. The workshop, held in Aghveran on 16-17 October 2014, also looked at the legal, institutional and financial obstacles.

The Global Water Partnership (GWP) staff in Zimbabwe attended World Water Day commemorations organised by Mukuvisi Woodlands Nature Reserve and Environment Centre incorporating the Eco Schools Environment Education Programme. The event was funded by the 3^rd European Union Water Facility Programme in Zimbabwe and  was held at Darwendale/Manyame Dam on the 25^th of March 2015. Apart from GWP, the event attracted 449 children and 74 teachers from 27 schools and 13 other organisations which included  the European Union (EU),Environment Africa (EA), Wildlife Conservation, Practical Action, Upper Manyame Sub Catchment Council (UMSCC) and National Parks.
