African leaders have pledged to mobilise USD 30bn per year by 2030 to achieve water security and sustainable sanitation on the continent through institutional private-public partnerships, sector reform, and higher national budget allocations.
About thirty participants took part in the training workshop on the integration of integrated water resources management (IWRM) in local development planning tools in the Mekrou Niger sub-basin from 19 to 21 December in Dosso, Niger.
Terrisha Walcott-Pierre a Master of Public Health candidate at the St. George’s University, has interned at the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean, becoming more versed with the real-world public health settings. Walcott, a public health professional was able to merge theory, with practical applications and enhance her skills as she conducted her practicum, gaining more insight on impactful community activities particularly the Mt. Granby Water Distribution Network Project.
GWP Eastern Africa Regional coordinator George Sanga joined participants from the Netherlands and 7 Africa countries (Burkina Faso, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, and South Africa), and Dutch Blue Deal partners for a workshop on sustainable financing of Integrated Water Resource Management. He shared the GWPEA experience with implementing the SDG6 IWRM Support Program on how the Blue Deal program can replicate the Matchmaking Initiative pilot in Kenya to mobilize financial resources in target countries.
These topics of water pricing, nature-based solutions, financial opportunities were discussed and an interesting excursion gave insights into the challenges of a local WRUA (Water Resources Users Association) in implementation of a Mangrove restauration project on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
Côte d'Ivoire's economic capital hosted a training workshop for stakeholders from the Volta basin on impact-based flood forecasting products and the Bulletin integrated into the myDewetra-VOLTALARM platform. The event was held from 12 to 16 June 2023 under the chairmanship of the Minister of Water and Forests, who was represented at the official ceremony by Colonel Major Lucien KOUASSI, Director General of Forests and Wildlife of Côte d'Ivoire.
