Building on the 10-year legacy of the "Mission Water" program, which implemented 19 technical solutions in Cyprus that save more than 38 million litres of water every year, "Zero Drop - Mission Water" is a new program which aims to promote the use of recycled water and improve the irrigation of green spaces in Cyprus, while saving 5,000,000 litres of water annually.
On 13 and 14 November 2024, the National Water Partnership of Côte d'Ivoire (PNECI) organised, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Water and Forests, a workshop bringing together a wide range of key partners in Côte d'Ivoire's water sector.
As a leading authority on water governance, GWP continued to put water at the centre of development at the UN 2023 Water Conference by participating in and leading over 30 events, committing pledges to the Water Action Agenda, and launching a sourcebook on managing multistakeholder partnerships to improve the global management of water resources. Summer School 2023 will open doors to the next generation of young water professionals from 2-8 July in Prague, Czechia to explore the benefits of Natural Small Water Retention Measures for Sustainable Water Management.
Mr Nanda Abeywickrama, (former Secretary, Ministry of Lands and Land Development (1978-88) and Director, International Co-operation (1988-94) also worked as a Special Adviser to the Director General of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) from 1997 to 2005. In 1998, Mr Abeywickrama’s name was recommended by the then Director General, IWMI and appointed as a founding member of the Global Water Partnership Technical Advisory Committee for South Asia (SASTAC). Later, he held the position of Regional Chair of GWP South Asia (GWP SAS) from 2005 when the SAS Secretariat was moved to Sri Lanka under the hosting agreement with IWMI. He served as the Chair, GWP SAS from 2005-06 and weaned away from work gradually. Currently, Mr Abeywickrama is in his retirement living with his beloved wife in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) West Africa have implemented the VFDM project entitled "Integrating flood and drought management and early warning for climate change adaptation in the Volta Basin" from June 2019 to June 2024. This project is financed by the Adaptation Fund.
A high-level delegation composed of the Secretary General, the Director of Legislation of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation and the Permanent Secretary of PANGIRE Niger carried out a study tour in Burkina Faso from 19 to 23 December 2022, on the theme "integrated management of rainwater for different uses".
