GWP CACENA Regional Council Meeting

10-11 December 2011 Almaty, Kazakhstan

 

The Council Meeting was hosted by CWP Kazakhstan. The RC meeting was attended by all eight Council members and some regional TEC members from all eight countries, and regional Secretariat. The following issues were discussed during meeting:

History

GWP was founded in 1996 to foster integrated water resources management (IWRM), defined as a process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources in order to maximise economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems.

A step towards better climate policy

The High-Level Round Table (HLRT) on Climate Change and Water Security, held in China in April and jointly sponsored by GWP China and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), was another step on the long road to better water policies.

Guidelines for Water Management

Located in the Baltic Sea Basin, water quality management is one of the Poland's key issues, creating problems for people’s livelihoods and the environment. Due to year-to-year variability in its water resources, devastating floods and local water scarcities are frequent.

Benin’s National IWRM Action Plan in Progress

Benin in West Africa belongs to the group of Least Developed Countries (LDC) with a low per capita GDP. Its economy is predominantly dependant on subsistence farming (extensive cotton production) and regional trade. The country is drained by a dense hydrographical network made up of seasonal flow rivers and less than 3% of its renewable water resources are currently used.
