On December 13 to 16, 2016, 'the Annual Workshop for International Cooperation Officers' and 'the Working Meeting on International Cooperation' were organized by the Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) of China in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

 

A water, energy and food nexus demonstration project, under the Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP), is set to be implemented in the Tuli- Mtshabezi River Sub Basin of the Shashe sub catchment with emphasis at Mtshabezi Mission to build the resilience of the community around the Basin. As part of the preparatory work scheduled prior to project implementation, an exploratory site visit was undertaken by the team of consultants from the water, energy and food sector on the 17th of July 2015.

The ministers in charge of water of Benin, Burkina and Niger have signed on 22 December 2015 in Cotonou, Benin the framework agreement of cooperation for the promotion of political dialogue and sustainable development of the Mékrou basin, an affluent of the Niger River shared by the three countries.

The general objective of this Cooperation Framework Agreement is to promote political dialogue and sustainable development  of the three states in order to facilitate good governance  in the planning and the integrated and sustainable management of the natural resources of the Mekrou Transboundary sub-basin, taking into account socio-economic needs, food security, poverty reduction through the preservation, the conservation of ecosystems and the improvement of the living conditions of local communities.

The Mékrou Project Officer was invited to take place to the meeting of Niger Basin Authority experts Committee prior to the Council of Minister in Abuja. The NBA meetings took place from May 25 to June 2, 2016 in the Capital city of Nigeria. GWP WA was fully represented by the Mékrou Project Officer.

The Regional Center AGRHYMET and the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Union brought together experts and research structures at the national level involved in the implementation of the Mékrou Project for a training workshop on hydrological modelling and the L-Moments methodology. "The aim of this workshop is to strengthen the capacities of the actors of the technical management of the Mékrou basin on tools that have been developed in the framework of the Project in order to allow the experts to master these tools and also to perpetuate all the assets of the project in terms of developing tools for replication in other basins. This makes it a very important workshop to ensure the sustainability of tools in the region", according to Dr. Abdou Ali, the Regional Coordinator of the training at AGRHYMET.

Three factsheets on the three demonstration pilot projects of the Integrated Drought Management Project (IDMP) West Africa have been produced. These factsheets give basic information on the various pilots projects being carried our in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger in the framework of the IDMP. The Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) is an initiative of The African Union (AU) Heads of States and Governments borne out of a declaration to improve water and human security. It is a three year programme being implemented in 8 African countries and 5 river basins including the White Volta Basin in Ghana. The project aims to promote water security and climate resilience development as a key component of socio-economic transformation of the people by strengthening decision making processes while ensuring coherence at all levels. As part of the project implementation process, a Field demonstration project is being implemented in the Upper East Region in the White Volta Basin.

The “Regional Workshop on South-South Cooperation in Flood Management” was jointly organized by GWP China and GWPO, from December 14 to 16, 2015, in Guangdong, China.

A scanned version of the Framework Agreement signed on December 21, 2015 by Benin, Burkina and Niger was transmitted to all members of the Advisory Committee, to the nine (9) Ministers related to NBA through the National Focal Structures of NBA, as well to the Regional Coordination of users of the natural resources of the Niger basin (CRU-ABN).
