The development of a USD 10.8 billion Botswana Water Investment Programme is currently under way following H.E. Mokgweetsi Masisi’s commitment at the United Nations 2023 Water Conference in New York to place the provision of water and sanitation services as well as the attendant infrastructure at the forefront of the national development agenda.

In the fourth and final discussion, she talked to Hycinth Banseka and Julienne Roux about the issue of equal access to and control of resources. Banseka, who is Regional Coordinator for GWP Central Africa, says it is a complex issue in Africa, where the cultural context of each country demands different approaches, and where language and long-term thinking are key to progress.
As part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded regional initiative, "Lake Chad Management Improvement Support" project, jointly implemented by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the LCBC in collaboration with GWP Central Africa (GWP-CAf) organized a regional workshop in Douala, Cameroon from July 6th – 9th, 2021 to train national and regional trainers on the implementation of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) approach at the transboundary level within a climate change context.

GWP was represented at a high-level panel on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and at a discussion on the role of water as a connector in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Both discussions highlighted integration between sectors as key to improving water governance.
The latest Transboundary Freshwater Security Governance online event, ‘Indigenous people in the governance of transboundary waters,’ was held on 15 September 2022. More than 80 participants from around the world took part in the interactive session to explore how to better involve indigenous people in the governance of transboundary waters.
