This was part of the PAWD (Partnership for African Water Development) Project, carried out with support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) aiming to prepare IWRM plans. GWP-Southern Africa supported the project team and also developed a capacity building programme to assist in the planning process.
Over the years Zambia has faced a number of challenges concerning the management of their water resources. This has resulted in pollution, inadequate information for decision making, inefficient use of the resource, inadequate supplies to meet needs, inadequate financing and limited stakeholder awareness and participation. A clear understanding developed that these challenges could be solved through applying Integrated Water Resources Management.
The IWRM planning process in Zambia resulted in a national framework for sustainable water management, that ownership of the national frameworks were developed by all stakeholders, that sector coordination was improved, that Regional and Country partnerships were strengthened and that water issues became integrated into the National Development Plans in Zambia.
