A book on Sri Lanka’s history of irrigation

The book “Hela Wari Purawatha” – a research on Sri Lanka’s history of irrigation from the beginning to modern times in Sinhala was launched by the Mahaweli Centre, and presented to President Maithripala Sirisena at President’s office on the 19 June 2018.

The book includes facts ranging from the starting of Sri Lankan irrigation to recently completed Moragahakanda Development Project.

The Editorial Board of the book composed of eminent Sri Lankan engineers and archaeologists including Emeritus Prof L. Premathilake, Archaeology Department, University of Peradeniya; Dr Chandana Rohana Withanachchi, Dean and Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka; Ms Badra Kamaladasa, Former Chair, Sri Lanka Water Partnership (SLWP); Dr Herath Manthrithilake, Head, Sri Lanka Development Initiative at International Water Management Institute (IWMI). This book is a collection of contributions gathered from 25 erudite authors who hold expertise of relevant fields of subjects. Mr Ranjith Ratnayake, Country Coordinator, SLWP and former Regional Council Member of GWP SAS Mr S.B. Niyangoda jointly written a chapter on Sri Lankan’s collaborative efforts on irrigation management while Ms Kamaladasa contributed a chapter on Irrigation Ordinance and its evolution in Sri Lanka. The chapter on international organisations connected to the sectors of irrigation and agriculture was written by Dr Manthrithilake.

President Sirisena, on the occasion said that he would provide his fullest assistance and cooperation to disseminate and familiarise the book among the field officers working in the field of irrigation as well as the public. The Mahaweli Centre is planning to translate the book to English and release it to public and especially to students who are willing to learn more on the gigantic history of Sri Lankan irrigation.
