The right to safe water in Southeast Asia

The human right to safe water is fundamental to leading a life with dignity. It is indivisible from, and the foundation for, achieving many other internationally recognised human rights. Yet approximately 844 million people live without access to safe water worldwide. Around 110 million of those people live in Southeast Asia (hereafter ASEAN).

Read the Raoul Wallenberg Institute's report on the history of the human right to safe water, and its contemporary relevance to Southeast Asian nations – in collaboration with Chinadialogue. Interactive Online Session: River Basin Organisations and the Implementation of Treaty Commitments

GWP and Wuhan International Water Law Academy are co-organising an interactive online series called the "Transboundary freshwater security governance train". The sessions are conducted in an approach of a ‘train’ stopping at various locations in the world. At each of the stops, a different topic from the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for Governance for Transboundary Freshwater Security is explored. On 16 March, the 3rd session looks at river basin organisations and the implementation of legal commitments.

The project in its design and implementation respects the rules and legal provisions that apply to the W Park zone and its buffer and influence zones, while developing and strengthening collaboration with the central and decentralised services in charge of the management of the W National Park.

Gender dimensions in the sustainable management of natural resources through a Nexus approach in the Drina River Basin

A workshop “Gender dimensions in the sustainable management of natural resources through a Nexus approach in the Drina River Basin” was held online on June 23 2021. Approximately 80 stakeholders from Ministries, local NGOs, Nexus related institutions and agencies and academia from the Drina River Basin joined the workshop that focused on the interplay between sustainable management of natural resources and gender in the three countries of the region: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia.

GWP South Asia’s Regional Chair Dr. Khondaker Azharul Haq passed away on June 27, 2020. Dr. Haq was the South Asia Chair since January 2019.
