Flash floods displaced thousands of families in Sri Lanka

Tuesday, 5 June 2018 - Pre-monsoon conditions in Sri Lanka have caused storms (with rainfall peaking at 350 mm over 24 hours) since 19 May 2018 in the southwest parts of the country. Precipitation triggered a flood and landslide situation across the country, affecting thousands of lives and livelihoods, as well as causing damage to property.

4th Arab Water Forum

The Arab Water Council (AWC) is holding its 4th Arab Water on 26-28 November in Cairo, Egypt. The Forum is a tri-annual event and is a meeting place for AWC’s members from 22 Arab states, together with their partners and associates from the region and from around the world.

Rainwater Harvesting in Valle de Jiboa, El Salvador

To contribute to water security in the communities of Valle de Jiboa, El Salvador, where communities face water scarcity, the Association of Municipalities (MIJIBOA) and the Women's Network of Valle del Jiboa, in partnership with the National Foundation for Development (FUNDE), GWP Central America and Mexichem, installed 7 rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems between February to September 2017. The initiative had a gender focus, as the women of the area were an active part of the implementation of the project.

GWP Provides Expertise to WMO HydroConference

GWP co-organised the recent World Meteorological Organization (WMO) HydroConference – the Global Conference for Prosperity through Hydrological Services – in Geneva, Switzerland. The event set out to create better interfaces between the providers of hydrological services and the users who need such services for a wide range of decision-making.

GWP Contributes to Hydrology Discussion at WMO

GWP Executive Secretary Monika Weber-Fahr spoke at the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO’s) Commission for Hydrology Technical Conference “Future Hydrological Priorities and Arrangements” on 11 February in Geneva, Switzerland. She delivered a key message on the need for organising so that stakeholders can easily engage with the WMO: “From the perspective of our partners in over 180 countries, GWP is keen to see WMO continue to build its offer to be an easily accessible, reliable and credible entry-point to the world of data and knowledge on the climate/water interface.”
