In our series of inter-regional discussions on gender equality and social inclusion, GWP Senior Gender and Social Inclusion Specialist Liza Debevec is exploring the ‘Action Areas’ of the GWP Gender Action Piece, to identify what GWP as an institution can do to apply them. In the fourth and final discussion, she talked to Hycinth Banseka and Julienne Roux about the issue of equal access to and control of resources. Banseka, who is Regional Coordinator for GWP Central Africa, says it is a complex issue in Africa, where the cultural context of each country demands different approaches, and where language and long-term thinking are key to progress.
In May 2019, at the invitation of the Chairs of the “National Focal Structures” for Cameroon and Congo, GWP CAf participated in the national stakeholder workshop to present and discuss the multi-sectoral diagnostic report in Congo (23rd – 24th May) and in Cameroon (27th – 28th May) in Brazzaville and Yaoundé respectively.
On Monday 8 April 2019, at Korea Global Adaptation Week, GWP launched the publication "Addressing Water in National Adaptation Plans – Water Supplement to the UNFCCC NAP Technical Guidelines". According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Central America is one of the most vulnerable regions. Effects are reflected in more intense, recurrent and prolonged hydrometeorological phenomena located at opposite ends of the same spectrum: floods and drought, and the Central American Dry Corridor (CSC) is one of those most affected. In addition, it is necessary to consider existing gaps in ecosystem protection, poor resilience of infrastructure and low territorial development. Panama is not part of the CSC, but one of its regions shares similar climatic characteristics - the dry arch of Panama.
A 3-part webinar series is held in February and March to strengthen climate and water linkages in national climate action plans such as the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and various investment mechanisms. The series is jointly organised by Cap-Net, UNDP, AGWA, SIWI, Water Governance Facility and GWP. It is the second webinar series organised on the theme water and climate - the first round of webinars were held in July 2020.
The 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP25, will take place on 2-13 December, in Madrid, Spain. The conference is being held under the presidency of the Chilean government. GWP is an accredited IGO observer and will bring new water insights to the climate agenda.
The Country Water Partnership of Mali (CWP-Mali) held its 7th Ordinary General Assembly on Thursday, September 13, 2018 in Bamako. The discussions focused on the difficulties in mobilizing funds to finance activities, organizational problems, etc.
