Hanoi, 22 March 2019 -- In the Southeast Asia region, prone to many disasters such as cyclones, floods and droughts, many efforts are being made to build capacity, influence policies and develop strategies to better equip member states to prevent and address disaster. Given the need and importance of paying attention to water-related disasters, the High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP), drafted ‘principles on investment and financing for water related disaster risk reduction’, which was launched during the 8th World Water Forum in Brazil. Building on a cooperation between the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the HELP and Japanese government, a session on DRR is organized with the main objective to consult on investment and financing for water related-disaster risk reduction principles. This consultation was organized as part of Viet Nam wAter Cooperation Initiative (VACI) 2019 as this initiative is closely related to the VACI’s objectives, which was designed to share and co-create innovative water solution with emphasis on Vietnam and tropical water issues. The Partnership Secretariat is hosted by the Global Water Partnership’s Water, Climate & Development Programme in Stockholm, Sweden. With the start of the activities of the Project "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin", a project implementation team is assessing the capacities and needs of national structures for flood and drought forecasting and warning.
GWP West Africa, International Secretariat for Water (ISW), the CWPs of Burkina and Benin and the NGO Eau Vive in Togo are organizing the inception workshop of the youth project known as “Tonfuturtonclimat” focusing on three pilot projects (one in each country, Benin, Burkina Faso and Togo) on climate related activity for youth and gender aspects. The Ouagadougou workshop will gather some youth organizations, officials and the partners of the project to discuss and come out with recommendations on how to better coordinate and implement the project activities.

In the night of Wednesday 16 to Thursday 17 May, a drama occurred in Lake Toho in Kpinou, in the commune of Athiémé /Departement of Mono, South-West Benin. Lifeless fish floated to the surface of the lake. The authorities of the sectoral ministries, in turn, went down to the site to observe the damage. Thousands of dead fish lay on the ground of a fish farm developer in Kpinnou.

Eau Vive Togo has trained women and local development committees on the promotion of good hygiene and sanitation practices and environmental protection from 26 to 28 February 2019 in Danyi-Apéyéme (Togo). The activity is carried out as part of its project to support young people in protecting the environment, water and soil (PAJPEES).
