Hanoi, 22 March 2019 -- In the Southeast Asia region, prone to many disasters such as cyclones, floods and droughts, many efforts are being made to build capacity, influence policies and develop strategies to better equip member states to prevent and address disaster. Given the need and importance of paying attention to water-related disasters, the High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP), drafted ‘principles on investment and financing for water related disaster risk reduction’, which was launched during the 8th World Water Forum in Brazil. Building on a cooperation between the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the HELP and Japanese government, a session on DRR is organized with the main objective to consult on investment and financing for water related-disaster risk reduction principles. This consultation was organized as part of Viet Nam wAter Cooperation Initiative (VACI) 2019 as this initiative is closely related to the VACI’s objectives, which was designed to share and co-create innovative water solution with emphasis on Vietnam and tropical water issues. Bhutan Water Partnership (BhWP) aligned to the World Water Day theme ‘Nature for Water: exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century’ conducted a drainage cleaning exercise on 22 March in Thimphu, Bhutan.

For the past century, Thailand had been experiencing constant severe floods which typically occurred in between August and December. Yet, the worst flood ever experienced in more than a half century in Thailand was the mega 2011 flood – indicating tremendous loss of lives and properties across socio-economic sectors. 

The Near East and North Africa (NENA) Land and Water Days are being convened on 31 March - 4 April in Cairo, Egypt, to review the progress made in addressing water scarcity in the region and foster exchange of knowledge and experience among countries and partners.

The aim of Stage 1 of the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme is to strengthen IWRM monitoring and reporting nationally, in order to identify critical areas for attention.

To contribute to closing the visibility gap between entrepreneurs, investors and enablers in the “Water Nexus”, the 4IP Group and Waterpreneurs are co-organising a matchmaking forum for sustainable development in Lusaka, Zambia, on 19-20 June. GWP Southern Africa is an event partner.

A GWP WA team took part in the network regional days help this year for the first time out of Stockholm in Budapest, Hungary from 23 to 26 May 2018.

Effective, accurate monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 (Water and Sanitation) is a technical process that requires considerable effort at the local level. Successful monitoring and reporting are contingent on regional circumstance, national institutional arrangements and associated capacities of agencies and ministries therein. As such, region specific adaptations are necessary to enhance existing methodologies toward increased efficacy and functionality at the local level.
