GWP Launches New Strategy: Towards 2020

World Water Day 2014 marks a big day for Global Water Partnership (GWP). Not only is the network taking part in the worldwide UN campaign to raise awareness on water-related issues – as it does every year – but this time GWP is also launching its new Strategy, Towards 2020, on this very day.

GWP Chair Dr. Ursula Schaefer-Preuss and Executive Secretary Dr. Ania Grobicki will officially launch the Strategy at the main celebrations of World Water Day in Tokyo, Japan on Friday 21 March.

Development co-operation is at the very core of what GWP does, and this is something that is reflected throughout the 2014-2019 Strategy. It builds on GWP’s previous work and achievements and it was developed through a year-long process of regional dialogues and consultations with GWP’s growing network of over 2,900 partner organisations across 172 countries.

The document outlines new directions for GWP, with the main goals focused on catalyzing change, sharing knowledge, and strengthening partnerships. New to this strategy is a thematic approach in six key areas of development – climate change, transboundary cooperation, food, urbanisation, energy, and ecosystems.

“The strategy Towards 2020 stresses the need for innovative and multi-sectoral approaches to adequately address the manifold threats and opportunities relating to sustainable water resource management in the context of climate change, rapid urbanization, and growing inequality,” says Dr Ursula Schaefer-Preuss.
