GWP hosted a special side-event on "Source-to-Sea action for Healthy Rivers & a Clean & Healthy Ocean" at the 9th 'Our Ocean' Conference in Athens, Greece on 16 April 2024, moderated by Dimitris Faloutsos, Deputy Regional Coordinator of GWP Mediterranean and Deputy Coordinator, Transboundary water cooperation theme, and co-organised with distinguished partners, Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy, Global Environment Facility (GEF), FAO, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), and SIWI.

The 'Resilient Thessaly' project, based on partnership between GWP-Med, the Municipality of Trikala and The Coca-Cola Foundation, will implement stormwater management works, within the frame of a holistic intervention aimed to strengthen the city's climate resilience in response to the devastating floods caused by storm Daniel in September 2024.

On the occasion of this year’s World Water Day, devoted to “Water for Peace”, we are presenting the ‘origins story’ of the successful transboundary collaboration for the protection of the Drin river basin, between 5 Riparians in Southeast Europe. This started 25 years ago, out of a shared desire to protect Europe’s oldest lake, Ohrid.

The GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme's efforts to reduce major transboundary environmental stresses in Mediterranean coastal areas, strengthen climate resilience and water security and how to continue its efforts in the future were the key topics of discussion during the MedProgramme side-event organised by UNEP/MAP and GWP-Med during the 5th Mediterranean Water Forum in Tunisia.

The draft WEFE Nexus Strategy which aims to assist countries and stakeholders in improving the integration of policy and management frameworks and instruments across WEFE sectors and spatial components throughout the Mediterranean, was discussed during the 5th Mediterranean Water Forum in Tunisia.

Representatives from Lebanese ministries joined a field visit to Nexus related projects in the Shouf region in Lebanon, aiming to address trade-offs across different sectors and generate socioeconomic and environmental advantages, organised by GWP-Med within the framework of the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme.

More than 60 stakeholders who attended the side-event "Gender Dynamics and the WEFE Nexus in the Mediterranean" co-organised by the UfM, AECID, GWP-Med and CAWTAR acknowledged that gender mainstreaming is the primary tool for attaining gender equality and redistributing power and influence in natural resources management.

GWP-Med, the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta and the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme have joined forces to protect the Ghar El Melh lagoon, one of Tunisia's most precious wetlands, improve climate resilience, advance sustainable development and ensure human well-being.
