Malawi strategies on climate smart water solutions in quest to achieve universal access by 2030

From a distance, Kalima Primary School in Chikwawa district in the Southern part of Malawi looks like any other public school in the country; happy children running up and down around the school campus but cautious of the scotching heat. Temperatures in Chikwawa can get as high as 40 degrees Celsius and yet, the only water tap at the school is mostly dry. Children must brave both the heat and unending desire to quench their thirst.

After learning about more than 350 Water ChangeMaker stories from around the world, we are excited to share with you the list of 78 semi-finalists that have been identified by our qualified and diverse technical jury to pursue the next stage in the Awards selection process. While the possibility to submit stories was offered in six languages, a majority of the semi-finalists come to us from South Asia, South America and Central America, with wide representation from 11 other regions.

The one-person-one-vote election to take place in early 2021 will be a historic milestone in the country’s road back to security, stability, and wellbeing. The economy is growing, driven by increased confidence, reforms, and bank development, and the business community is resilient, globally connected, and entrepreneurial. New opportunities for economic cooperation and integration on the Horn of Africa plays to the country’s advantage. Still, water remains a critical factor in Somalia’s development pathway. It is a water scarce country, at risk of climate related variability, and has to improve its capacity to manage water well in coming years.
