Aranayake, a secluded agricultural area known mainly for tea and spice cultivation, came to the limelight for tragic reasons with the Samasara landslide of May 2015. Caused partly due to climate change and partly due to anthropogenic influences, the landslide was a result of 6 days of constant high intensity rains. The incident also caused the highest number of casualties ever recorded in a Sri Lankan landslide.

GWP has organised five regional consultations on the proposed HELP Principles on Investments and Financing for water-related disaster risk reduction. The consultations were held in Central and Eastern Europe, South Asia, Southern Africa, South East Asia and South America. “Disasters are barriers for development. In our region we are struggling to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these issues must be part of the political agenda in every country," said Alejandra Mujica, Regional Coordinator of GWP South America, who hosted the final consultation on 23 April.

GWP continues engaging on WASH climate resilience through its collaboration with UNICEF. A Strategic Framework was developed to provide WASH service delivery that is resilient to climate change, and a series of technical briefs and learning modules support the implementation of the Framework. All materials are now available on a new website.

In a long-anticipated event, the UN’s High Level Political Forum (HLPF) met in New York in July, to review progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, including, for the first time, the one dedicated to water, SDG 6. Effective, accurate monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 (Water and Sanitation) is a technical process that requires considerable effort at the local level. Successful monitoring and reporting are contingent on regional circumstance, national institutional arrangements and associated capacities of agencies and ministries therein. As such, region specific adaptations are necessary to enhance existing methodologies toward increased efficacy and functionality at the local level.

October 28-30, 2018, the Great Rivers Forum (GRF) took place at the Changjiang Civilization Museum in Wuhan, Hubei Province where is the base of the Changjiang/Yangtze River Commission in China.
