The Southern African Development Community (SADC), with support from the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) organised the Gender Mainstreaming in the Water Sector Project Preparation and Financing Clinic on 25 March 2019 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Hanoi, 22 March 2019 -- In the Southeast Asia region, prone to many disasters such as cyclones, floods and droughts, many efforts are being made to build capacity, influence policies and develop strategies to better equip member states to prevent and address disaster. Given the need and importance of paying attention to water-related disasters, the High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP), drafted ‘principles on investment and financing for water related disaster risk reduction’, which was launched during the 8th World Water Forum in Brazil. Building on a cooperation between the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the HELP and Japanese government, a session on DRR is organized with the main objective to consult on investment and financing for water related-disaster risk reduction principles. This consultation was organized as part of Viet Nam wAter Cooperation Initiative (VACI) 2019 as this initiative is closely related to the VACI’s objectives, which was designed to share and co-create innovative water solution with emphasis on Vietnam and tropical water issues. “Asia and pacific region should agree for a regional policy to address water-related disaster risk reduction” said Hon. Palitha Range Bandara, the State Minister of Irrigation and Water Resource Management at a special side event on Water and Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia at the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2018.

Dr. Monika Weber-Fahr, GWP’s new Executive Secretary has visited West Africa in the last week of June. She had a stay in Dakar, Senegal to take part in the World Water Forum’s Board of Governors’ meeting, and in the Climate KIC strategy meeting.

Represented by its Regional Coordinator, Mr. Hycinth BANSEKA, the GWP-CAf Secretariat actively participated in various sessions, particularly those on "The Contextual Analysis of Sanitation in Gabon: Opportunities and Perspectives (in relation to the SDGs)" organized by the Ministry of Water and Energy of Gabon and "Water security, infrastructure, investment and innovation".

The new chair of CWP Ivory Coast, Dr. KOFFI Ehui Bruno is paying courtesy visits to all CWP partner organizations to introduce the new CWP management team, the new vision assigned to the promotion of IWRM at the national level, the formalization of the membership of certain structures, request for new partnerships.

The Global Water Partnership - in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank, Climate Change Commission-Philippines, the Government of Palau, Asia-Pacific Water Forum, Japan International Cooperation Agency, UN Environment, and the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network - is organising, in consultation with the Green Climate Fund, a Technical Workshop on Project Preparation for Transformational Climate Resilience Water Project Concepts in Asia. The workshop is held 15-16 October at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Headquarters in Manila, Philippines.

Drought in the central American region is characterized by a variation in rainfall distribution, manifested by a few rainy events among long periods without rainfall within the rainy season. This situation severely affects production cycles of agricultural producers, who heavily rely on rain-fed agriculture and lack adequate technology to face droughts; negatively influencing overall economic and social stability, and wellbeing. In the Honduran agricultural sector, drought mainly manifests itself through crop loss, reduced crop acreage and water supply problems in terms of both quantity and quality. The effects generated have significant impact on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is why this issue is very high up in the political agenda.
