Background

In June 2017, the Government of the Republic of South Africa, under the aegis of the High Level Panel on Water (HLPW) commissioned the Global Water Partnership (GWP) to develop a legacy initiative of the HLPW in Africa. In response, the Africa Water Investment Programme (AIP) was developed by GWP in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility (UNDP-GEF) and the HLPW Secretariat at the World Bank/UN.

Mali, SC of the IWRM Support programme discusses the necessary reorientation

The Malian Minister of Energy and Water, Malick Alhousseïni, presided over the opening ceremony of the Steering Committee of the Joint Water Resources Management Support Programme (PCA-GIRE) met on May 31st in Bamako. In attendance was also the Swedish Ambassador, the representative of the Dutch Embassy and the Chair of CWP-Mali.

Mauritanian youth capacitated and mobilized for water and climate

Aiming to foster youth involvement in the water and climate action in Mauritania, GWP-Med is organizing in collaboration with the Mauritanian NGO “AISER, Citoyenneté et Droits Humains” a training cycle composed of a series of three workshops targeting youth active in local NGOs. The workshops will be organized in the framework of the Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) implemented in Mauritania by GWP-Med. At the end of the training workshops, participants’ capacities are expected to be enhanced in relation to climate change risks evaluation, adaptation actions identification and projects proposals formulation and funds leverage.

IWD 2018: How to Empower Women in the Water Sector

The UN theme of this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD 2018) relates to gender equality and activism, building on global movements such as #metoo and #TimeIsNow. For the water community we translated this to “Time is now for equality in water access and management!” and followed it up by asking women in the GWP network “How can activism empower women in the water sector?” These issues were also raised in a Facebook Live session on 8 March together with GWP Partner Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).

Youth associations of Cameroon prepare the 12th Conference of Youth

The Youth associations of Cameroon selected by the COY Steering Committee to organize a Conference of Youth (COY) in Cameroon met on August 13th, 2016 to agree on the preparation of the 12th Local COY.

 

A total of 15 leaders from six Cameroon Youth associations such as Women In Development (WID), Association of African Students (AEA); Voices United To Serve Forest and Environment (USFE); Synergie/Action des Jeunes pour l'Encadrement et la Promotion des Hommes Complets (SAJEPHCO); GIC FOREDEV and YEMA actively took part in the consultation meeting  which was the second of its kind and held on preparations for the Local COY12.

 

The meeting aimed at gathering the views of stakeholders on the realism of the guidance document of the Local COY 12 and especially defining the strategy to tie up the final preparations for this global event in order to implement it at national level.

 

It also provided the framework for an exchange / experience sharing between participants on the previous COY.   GWP -CAf staff to provide them with advice on the development of projects related to climate and present them the vision and mission of GWP.

 

During this meeting, a brainstorming was done around the different activities likely to be part of the agenda of the event. There was among others a series of refresher training workshop on the ins and outs of COY12, then on the concept of climate change as well as the organization of power walk finally a panel discussion/conference on climate.
