The 9th World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), brings together stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. The Forum is held 7-13 February in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 5th World Ocean Summit will be held at Riviera Maya, Mexico, on 7-9 March. The event is organised by the Economist Group.

The network has been set up and the focal points installed. The charter and statutes of the network have been validated.

In 2004, action was taken to address some major challenges in Ethiopia through the Ethiopia Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Movement. The objectives were to promote improved water, sanitation and hygiene practices and gain political and social commitment. The initiative has enjoyed great success. Lessons learnt include the importance of defining responsibilities and obligations of members, the importance of appointing local staff that facilitates the communication, and the importance of regular funding.

As an academic knowledge product, “Strategies and Policies for Water Security” is prevailing as it reflects comprehensive and objective data and information of water, food, energy, environment and ecology.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is supporting financially the establishment of the ECOWAS Regional Water Observatory and the technical support will come from the UNEP-DHI Water and Environment partnering with GWP/WA as a consortium.
