In an interview for GWP-Med Newsflow, Mr Almotaz Abadi, Managing Director for Water, at the Union for the Mediterranean - Water and Environment Division, discusses regional efforts to address water scarcity and climate challenges, the key ingredients of impactful UfM projects, ways to adapt to COVID-19 effects, and the necessity of adopting a proactive approach for realizing the SDGs.

The islanders of Oinousses are provided with water saving equipment, to help them save 1.000.000 litres of water over one year, through the "Water is in our Hands" inititiave by GWP-Med and consumer goods company Reckitt, in collaboration with local authorities.

A workshop “Gender dimensions in the sustainable management of natural resources through a Nexus approach in the Drina River Basin” was held online on June 23 2021. Approximately 80 stakeholders from Ministries, local NGOs, Nexus related institutions and agencies and academia from the Drina River Basin joined the workshop that focused on the interplay between sustainable management of natural resources and gender in the three countries of the region: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia.

Two virtual 2-day workshops focusing on ‘The Climate-Land-Energy-Water (CLEWs) modelling framework and its use in the Nexus Assessments of the Drin and the Drina River Basins’ were held on 6-7 July and 8-9 July 2021 respectively.

Five communes (Avrankou, Bopa, Ifangni, Ouinhi and Pobè) in Benin were supported for good governance principles in their municipalities through an exercise to promote integrity practices in the water and sanitation sector. This exercise was supported by the development and implementation of an integrity action plan for the said sectors.

Kenneth Alfaro Alvarado is Project Cooridinator for Water Pollution Prevention at Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper in Costa Rica. The non-profit organisation has been a GWP Partner since 2013 - their motivation to join the GWP network was a wish to participate in the processes around Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). This interview describes the organisation and its partnership with GWP - it is also available in Spanish.
