Objectives
Along with GWP’s strategic goals of catalyzing change and strengthening partnerships, sharing knowledge and developing capacity to share knowledge are equally important. Water management education nowadays needs a better understanding of multi-disciplinary aspects of water governance such as legal issues, participatory approaches, and conflict resolution techniques. Global Water Partnership Central and Eastern Europe has designed this summer school to enhance skills of students currently enrolled in different water related MSc and PhD programs from universities throughout Europe.
Since 2000, the Global Water Partnership (GWP) has developed the IWRM ToolBox as a free, open-access, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) knowledge resource. IWRM Toolbox sessions at the summer school will be guiding participants over the GWP IWRM Toolbox and presenting the possibilities to integrate practical IWRM solutions into their education. Concrete case studies on application of concrete tools of IWRM (economic tools, stakeholder involvement, institutional roles, and water legislation reforms, link of water to other sectors (agro, energy, and ecosystem) will be presented and discussed based on the interest from participants.
The summer school will have a special block on Water Security and Climate Resilience which will focus on some of the most discussed climate topics in the world at the moment. These will include Paris Agreement, National Adaptation Plans, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Green Climate Fund, GWP Water and Climate Programme, Integrated Drought Management Programme and others. The participants will learn how the planning at national and regional levels is informed by the latest analyses and processes on the global level.
In addition, GWP together with the World Bank and the University of South Florida have developed a training package on Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) that will also be introduced during this course. More and more cities are facing severe water and wastewater management challenges, and this training is providing a new holistic approach in integrating IWRM principles with urban water management processes.
Eligibility and fees
The Summer School is open to students in existing MSc and PhD water management related programs, especially from universities which are registered partners to GWP CEE and GWP MED. The participants must be able to communicate fluently in English. Financial support, covering the prize of the course and accommodation, for students from Partner universities of GWP CEE and GWP MED will be provided on first come-first served basis.
The summer school is open also to MSc and PhD students from any other university in Europe that show an interest in enhancing IWRM knowledge and broader aspects of water security.
Fees:
- 0 EUR registration fee for students from GWP CEE and GWP MED Universities which are officially registered as GWP Partners
- 380 EUR registration fee, tuition, accommodation on campus (in double rooms) and lunches for duration of the summer school for student from Universities which are not officially registered as GWP Partners.
