Messages from Caribbean Women in Water on Gender Equality for a Sustainable Tomorrow: GWP-C Celebrates IWD 2022

Each year on March 8th, the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) joins the world in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD); a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

This year’s IWD theme is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.” A theme that recognises the contributions of women and girls across the globe who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.

Advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crisis and disaster risk reduction is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. However, it is a fact that women and girls are effective and powerful leaders and changemakers for climate adaptation and mitigation and they should be empowered to have a voice and be equal players in decision-making related to climate change and sustainability. This is essential for sustainable development and greater gender equality.

GWP-C sees IWD as an opportunity to continue to celebrate the achievements of Caribbean women in its network and to empower women and girls. We are pleased to spotlight some amazing Caribbean women professionals in the GWP-C network who were all asked the question: What is your International Women’s Day message in terms of the importance of gender equality for a sustainable future? Here is what they had to share!

It is a reality that without gender equality today, a sustainable future and an equal future, remains beyond our reach.
