HELP-GWP Southeast Asia Consultation Meeting on Draft Principles on Investment And Financing For Water-Related Disaster Risk Reduction

Hanoi, 22 March 2019 -- In the Southeast Asia region, prone to many disasters such as cyclones, floods and droughts, many efforts are being made to build capacity, influence policies and develop strategies to better equip member states to prevent and address disaster. Given the need and importance of paying attention to water-related disasters, the High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP), drafted ‘principles on investment and financing for water related disaster risk reduction’, which was launched during the 8th World Water Forum in Brazil. Building on a cooperation between the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the HELP and Japanese government, a session on DRR is organized with the main objective to consult on investment and financing for water related-disaster risk reduction principles. This consultation was organized as part of Viet Nam wAter Cooperation Initiative (VACI) 2019 as this initiative is closely related to the VACI’s objectives, which was designed to share and co-create innovative water solution with emphasis on Vietnam and tropical water issues. Caribbean and Central America Join Forces on Rainwater Harvesting

GWP Central America hosted a regional workshop on Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) on 22-23 September in El Salvador. The workshop brought together practitioners from across the region. GWP Caribbean also took part, under the theme “Considerations for Implementing Policies and Practices Related to Rainwater Harvesting and Addressing Climate Change.”

GWP-SEA GOVERNANCE

According to the existing statued of GWP -SEA, the governance system consists of partners (through Consulting Partners Meeting), Steering Committtee, and Secretariat. The Steering Committee (SC) will serve as highest policy and decisions making of GWP-SEA, and shall be composed by democratically elected representatives from each Country Water Partnership (CWP) or Country Network. It shall have one member representing their respective CWP plus a Chair. The SC Members will be elected by their respective CWPs or Country Network. One half of the member of the first SC will have maximum term of three years while the other half will have a term of two years.

GWP and AMCOW – Collaborating for Success

GWP and AMCOW – the African Ministers’ Council on Water – have been working together for over a decade. AMCOW Executive Secretary Dr Canisius Kanangire recently visited the GWP secretariat in Stockholm to discuss current and future collaboration. Dr Kanangire says that GWP has a lot of knowledge, experience, and expertise that can support AMCOW to reach results in many aspects of water resources management.
