This month, Howard Bamsey began his duties as the new Chair of GWP. He did so with a visit to the global secretariat in Stockholm, Sweden, where he met staff and got briefed on current issues around the network. We took the opportunity to discuss his thoughts on joining GWP, and his reflections on some of GWP’s most recent activities at the UN climate change conference, COP24, in December.
Music has the power to connect us, tell stories, inform and educate large audiences on various topics. With this in mind and coupled with the fact that this year marks the 16th anniversary of the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), in mid-June the organisation launched its “Theme Song Challenge.”
World Water Day (WWD) is commemorated on 22 March every year. This year’s theme was “Leaving no one behind”. GWP and its Partners worldwide supported the theme by arranging a wide range of activities. On Thursday, September 27th, 2018, the entire GWP Network will embark on its first-ever “Follow-the-Sun” GWP Network Meeting. Partners from 46 countries will go LIVE from all corners of the world.
Batu Uprety, Executive Committee Member, Global Water Partnership Nepal/JVS attended the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Partnership Scoping Mission held on 31 July 2018 in Kathmandu.
In a long-anticipated event, the UN’s High Level Political Forum (HLPF) met in New York in July, to review progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, including, for the first time, the one dedicated to water, SDG 6. A GWP delegation was present, communicating key messages from its global network of 3,000-plus partners.
With the incidence of droughts and flooding increasing, WASH Climate Resilience has been identified as an important priority for the GWP network and its sector partners. In response to this, GWP joined forces with UNICEF to develop a Strategic Framework for WASH Climate Resilience and technical programming guidance to implement the Framework in countries.
GWP Steering Committee Member and CEO of Thirst Mina Guli is going to run 100 marathons in 100 days – her single goal is to raise awareness around the global water crisis, and show what 100% commitment to water means. Mina’s challenge starts on 4 November with the New York Marathon. She will then run across Europe, China, Australia, India, the Middle East, Africa and South America, before finishing her 100-day run in the United States. GWP will help Mina to share water stories along her route.
"When the stakes are high: Water Engineering and Global Diplomacy for Sustainable Cities. Decentralized Sanitation, Recycling and Zero-waste concepts" Summer School will take place on 18-28 June 2019 in Piran, Slovenia.
