GWP China and GWP family at UN 2023 Water Conference

The first United Nations conference on water since 1977 was held at the United Nations New York, from 22-24 March 2023.

It marked a watershed moment for the sustainable development community as a whole, and GWP, as a leading authority on water governance, is committed to playing an active role in advancing the global water agenda. Co-hosted by the Governments of the Netherlands and Tajikistan, the UN 2023 Water Conference is about uniting the world in accelerating action towards achieving SDG 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Water is an essential factor for economic develpment and pivotal element for ecological health. Development VS protection is a kind of paradox in many cases, yet reaching a balance between them is necessity as we are seeking for sustainable development for the entire humanity an the whole world.

Along with IWHR, GWP China organized a side event 'Achieving a balance between protection and development – Water for rural prosperity' at the UN Water Conference on March 23, in New York, U.S. Headquarter of the United Nations.

Co-chaired by Dr. PENG Jing, Vice President of IWHR and Ms.Elena Trovesi, CEO of GWP, the session invited Minister LI Guoying, Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. QU Xing, Deputy Director of UNESCO and Mr. Loic Fauchon, WWC President to address the opening ceremony.

Prof. JIANG Yunzhong, regional coordinator of GWP China, delivered his research achievement on 'Protection and Development of Water Source Area: Practice in China'.  And GWP Knowledge Management Sepcialist Mr. Laurent-Charles Tremblay-Lévesque shared his findings on 'From Sponge Cities to Country-side Mops: the Role of Rural Areas in Enhancing Water Storage' with audiences.

GWPO@ UN 2023 Water Conference

From March 22 to 24, 2023, GWP and other regions co-hosted and participated in a wide range of events in New York to demonstrate the impact of its multi-stakeholder partnership on improving the way the world manages its water resources.

More specifically, GWP would demonstrate how GWP's work contributes to the aims of the Water Action Decade; contribute to game-changing thought-leadership and action on water issues; support political processes that increase the importance of water issues in the sustainable development agenda and provide accountability moments for leaders; enhance key partnerships and donor relationships to allow GWP to fulfil its mission: and push for stronger integration across UN and other relevant platforms to increase resource efficiency and overall impact on SDG 6.
