Water-Energy Nexus Seminar at the 2015 World Water Week

On August 23, 2015, GWP China, jointly with WRI and WWF China, organized the side-event of the 2015 World Water Week, "How to Secure Water and Energy Amidst Rapid Urbanization" in Stockholm, Sweden

The event was also supported by GWPO, WWF, Peking University, Ministry of Agriculture of P.R. China and Stockholm Environment Institute.
The event was concentrating on the relationship between the sustainable supplies of water-energy and urban development. According to the research , the conflicts between water and energy are intensified in China due to rapid increases in water and energy demand associated with the rapid urbanization. Such conflicts are also intensified because some decision-makers ignored the inter-linkages between water and energy. Desalinating seawater or transferring water over long distances, or treating wastewater, for example, significantly increase the energy requirements associated with providing freshwater to urban dwellers. Because of the strong linkages between water and energy, public and private sector decision-makers need to better understand water-energy dynamics and learn how to manage these resources in an integrated manner.
In the morning on Sunday, the event was formed with the case studies and new research programs from WRI, GWP, WWF and other research institutes on the water-energy nexus in an urban context. Both public and private sectors shared their perspectives on managing water-energy dynamics in an urban setting, and the implications for sustainable urban development, regarding water and energy nexus in China and African regions, hydropower development in China and energy and water utilization policies in China. It attracted more than 100 participants from different countries and industries. GWP China invited Angela Klauschen, Senior Network Officer of GWP to deliver presentation and Steven Downey, Head of Communications of GWP to moderate the panel discussion. On behalf of GWP China region, Rugang Zheng, Coordinator, joined the panel discussion and Rudolph Cleveringa, Acting Executive Secretary of GWPO also delivered a speech before the end of the event to express the mission of GWP and willingness of developing cooperation with other potential partners.
